A study on the occlusal pattern in primary dentition of children from Chonnam Province

Abstract
The occlusion pattern of the primary dentition of 3,5 year-old children was studied by molding the stone casts of 100 children from Chonnam Province.
The results were as follows;
1. The most common areas of interdental spaces were medial to the upper primary canine(75%) and distal to the lower primary canine(61 % ).
2. In sagittal canine relationship, Class I occlusion pattern was 59%(59 children), Class II was 9%(9 children), Class IR was 6%(6 children), and the different canine relationship between right and left side was 26%(26 children).
3. In sagittal molar relationship, Class I occlusion pattern was 59%(59 children), Class II was 1 % (1 child), Class II[ was 19% (19 children), the different molar relationship between right and left side was 21 %, and 52 was found to have the same pattern in canine and molar relationship.
4. The over jet not exceeding 2mm was 73%(73 children) and the overbite not exceeding 2mm was 83%(83 children).
5. The cross bite was 4%(4 children) and scissors-bite was absent.
6. The midline deviation was 21%(21 children).
7. The prevalence of interdental space in the present study was lower than that in Westerns.
8. The change of canine and molar relationship with age showed that Class I relationship had a tendency to decrease and Class II relationship had a tendency to increase.
9. The over jet and overbite of 2 to 3mm had a tendency to decrease with age.
